It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

oysterville-weather-forecastAccording to the weatherman (aka meteorologist these days) it’s going to be raining here in Oysterville for the forseeable future.  Good to know.  Time to get at some of those ‘inside projects’ that I seem to put off whenever I can.  Not that I would necessarily be out and about otherwise.  It’s just that some chores seem to go with rainy weather – like ironing and polishing silver and cleaning out bureau drawers.

The operable word, of course, is “chores.”  There are a number of other choices that require being indoors, at least for me.  I could begin my next book.  The writing part that is.  Which, if you are a writer you know to be only a part of the idea-to-publication process.  Or, I could finally finish watching “Downtown Abbey” or, perhaps, begin reading the library book that I picked up the other day.

Or… Nyel’s suggestion for such a day always goes right back to the old nursery rhyme.  The part that says “and couldn’t get up in the morning.”  For him, a rainy day is the perfect excuse to sleep in.  I’m not sure if it’s part of my inherent “Puritan work ethic” or the expression “you’ll sleep a long time when you’re dead” that gets me up-and-at-‘em” early in the morning, even on rainy days.  Whatever it is, it’s right up there with playing only when the work is finished.

Come to think of it, maybe it’s part of another old saying:  – “A man may work from dusk to dawn, but a woman’s work is never done. And, no doubt, it has something to do with my generation.  Many of my younger friends don’t even own an iron.  Or silverware that needs polishing, for that matter.  And I know for a fact that most of them are much better read!
