We picked up Tucker and Carol in mid-afternoon.  We women sat in back, the men in front, in typical old people’s style.  We weren’t going far.  Just to Ocean Park.  We had a mission:  to see Holly’s house.

For months now, the construction of Holly’s house has been one of the topics at our Friday Night gatherings.  Nyel and I had been to take a look once before, but Carol and Tucker had not.  None of us know Holly, but her parents, Bill and Sue, are our friends and are among the FNR (Friday Night Regulars.)  And we know her contractors, the Mack brothers.

In fact, my house on the bay, built in 1978, was one of the first jobs Wolfgang and Günter did with their master carpenter step-father Ossie Steiner.  I wonder how many beautiful homes they have built since.  Now a couple of their sons work with them and I imagine they still speak a mixture of German and English on the job.  I always thought that was one of the things that gave my house a special flavor…

Holly’s place is coming right along.  We all agreed that it’s bigger than we had thought.  And then we lapsed into that discussion about buildings-in-progress and how, at some stages, they look immense and, at others, they look much smaller than anticipated.  Holly’s place is at the immense stage I think.

After we had ducked in and out of the raindrops taking pictures, we headed to Adelaide’s for cup of coffee.  We were there for the better part of an hour, visiting about all manner of topics but mostly about the “things” in our lives.  We are all ‘stewards’ of family memorabilia of one sort or another and…  And, when it comes to the ‘what next’ question, there are numerous possibilities but there aren’t many easy answers.

It was still raining as we pulled into Oysterville, but we hardly noticed.  We were replete with visions of Holly’s future home and our continuing concern about the things from the past that we harbor in our own homes.  A very satisfactory ‘double date’, indeed!

I’m sure that Holly’s house will be beautiful. Exactly where is it? I might recognize the location.
