It could always be worse…

Sometimes I wish we still had that old outhouse…

The house seems to be going through a bad patch.  First the chimney (and we apparently aren’t quite out of the woods on that yet…)  Next, the pump — I had a 6-horsepower pump and we upped it to a 6-1/2.  Maybe a big mistake.  Every time I flush or turn a spigot or set out a hose, it’s shake, rattle, and roll from under the house.  Sometimes I think the toilet is going to jettison right up through the ceiling.  The plumber says I probably need a larger pressure tank.  But, he cautions, the pipes are very old and very rusty…  Yes, the water is coming out orange (and sometimes in clumps.)  It will be a few weeks until he can install the new pressure tank.  Yikes!

Uh Oh!

Then, this evening, neighbor Carol called and said she was at my front door.  She and Tucker had been for a walk and noticed that one of my upstairs windows is coming apart.  “Come out and take a look,” she said.  I thought it was a window that Jay-the-painter-handiman-everthing-guy and I had been watching; we have plans to fix it this summer… But no!  It’s the window next to the one I expected.”  I called Jay and he said he’d come take a look in the morning.

Maybe it will fix itself over night…

And to top it all off, just now my dishwasher went wonky. I turned it on — all buttons pushed to their “usual” spots and…  the start button flashes and beeps and…. nothing.  I turned it off.  Started over.  Repeat performance.  Several times.  I’ll do the dishes by hand in the morning and call the repair folks…  Sigh.

Meanwhile… I was going to work on my column tonight but… I’m rethinking.  Going to bed and pulling the covers over my head sounds like a much better plan.  Some days these bad patches of life really try my patience.  And this is one of those days for sure!

It’s going to be all right, Sydney, I’m sure of it. The alignment of the planets was a little off, I admit, but it’s gotten a lot better during the past week, so don’t worry, things will come out ok.

I think we should go back to feeling good about it. Tonight’s fire was perfect. I think I was having trouble with the damper last time and now I’ve figured it out. But I really appreciate your sympathy!!! And the head of the chimney company actually called me and talked to me about possible causes and solutions to last week’s problems, wanted me to mail him pictures etc. and said if the problems persisted they’d be back to work them out. He said they want me to be happy about the job they did. It’s not often you get that kind of service these days!!!
So all is well now. S.
