The Chunnel Train, Eurostar
Our usual early-morning-over-coffee discussion this ayem revolved around upcoming doctors’ appointments. Specifically, those appointments that would necessitate our being in Portland. Not a biggee in other seasons of the year, but in winter it’s a matter that requires some planning. When daylight is limited and roads are likely to be snowy or icy, we find it’s best to hope for the best but plan for the worst.
So, with two appointments on one day – one at 10:00 and one at 2:00 – the discussion centered on whether or not to plan on going up the day before or, perhaps staying until the next day to make the (ideally) three-hour trip home. Or both. Weather dependent, we decided. But, unfortunately, the forecast is for two weeks only and that’s not quite long enough for making our current decision.
“I’d just like to take the Chunnel,” I said helpfully. “We liked the Chunnel.” And we did, too, though it’s not as scenic as driving from London to Paris and taking a boat across the channel. But it’s fast. And someone else is in charge.

The Train to Hogwarts
“And where would you catch the Chunnel Train here in Oysterville?” Nyel asked,
“Oh, over at the schoolhouse parking lot I imagine,” said I.
“Well, in that case,” said my usually practical and very grounded husband, “I’d rather catch a ride on the train to Hogwarts.”
Great idea! But would they let non-students (and Muggles at that) aboard?
Our planning for the Portland trip deteriorated rapidly from that point forward. Not to worry, though. We still have plenty of time to hope for sunshine, warmth, and safe traveling. Surely, the end of January won’t be as chilly as the beginning. (Predictably, Nyel said, “And don’t call me Shirley.)
