Was the promised “Gershwin Review” what drew the crowds? Or was it the popularity of locals Pat McKibbin, Sandy Nielsen and Katherine Holway Smith on the program? Certainly many were there for the return of naughty duo Gwen Haw and Bradley Huson and their accompanist Karen Kajita. And this year Seattle actor/musician Guy Nelson was also performing.

Whatever the reasons, our little church was filled to capacity; latecomers stood at the back or in the vestibule. No one was disappointed. I wouldn’t say that Pat rushed his message or that the hymn-singing went faster than usual. Or even that the collection baskets were passed with more alacrity than sometimes. But it was pretty clear that it was the ‘music’ part of Music Vespers that most people were eagerly awaiting.

And I don’t think anyone was disappointed. Thirteen Gershwin songs, beginning with “S’wonderful” and finishing with “Blah Blah Blah” were presented. Plus two encores. Both Gwen and Bradley had costume changes involving slinky dresses and this time they weren’t the only items to come out of the church closets. Several articles of clothing also flew onto the stage including the most commodious bra ever to be exposed in front of God and everybody here in Oysterville – at least in living memory!

Friends and neighbors gathered afterwards in Bradley’s gorgeous garden for a ‘light (not!) repast’ – actually a buffet and beverage assortment that was a performance in itself. The sartorial splendor among the guests added to the ambiance as well.  In fact, one guest (that would be Anne de Marcken) managed to change costumes several times during the afternoon and evening.  And later… more singing around the dining room piano.

Just another day in Beautiful Downtown Oysterville!!! Indeed!
