Starla and Cate
I’m looking forward to Sunday! The third day of a three-day weekend could be a bit of a let-down, but not this one! Cate and Starla Gable will be doing the ‘special music’ at the Oysterville Music Vespers service. I can scarcely wait, even though it’s Party! Party! Party! until then!
Actually… it’s more like Picnic! Picnic! Picnic! First, early this afternoon in Ilwaco. Next, late this afternoon in Oysterville. Tomorrow in the evening in Ilwaco again. Three different venues. Three different sets of friends. Fun! Fun! Fun! Definitely my kind of holiday.
We haven’t decided yet if we are going to the Ocean Park Parade. We are torn. It’s getting more difficult to stand for several hours so last year we put a couple of lawn chairs in the car, went early (an hour ahead), parked fairly close (two blocks away), lugged our chairs to a great curbside spot in front of the school, and people-watched while we waited. By the time the parade started though, there were four or five people deep lining the street in front of us. Our sitting-down sightlines were totally gone and, even standing, I was too short to see much. And, anyway, last year we still had the PC Cruiser; our lawn chairs won’t fit in the Prius.
We aren’t much on the fireworks part of Independence Day anymore. I think it’s mostly a case of been-there-done-that as far as watching the ‘big shows’ in Long Beach or Astoria. As for lighting our own – I think that might have been fun when I was ten. Now it just seems like a huge waste of money and a fire and safety hazard as well. (Oh my! Do I sound old or what?!) But, the Ilwaco fireworks display at the Port tomorrow night might be a different story – and we can see it from our friends’ porch if we can stay awake long enough. (That age card again…)
But the pièce de résistance of the weekend will be Cate and Starla singing and playing and no doubt involving all of us in Sunday’s Vesper Music Program. I have no idea what they are planning. Last year they had a bunch of us standing in front raising the cue cards (sort of on cue) for the geoduck song – hilarious! I know they’ve had several requests for a repeat of that… so we shall see. Whatever they do, I’m sure it will involve some humor, some thought-provoking lyrics, and their own special ‘genetic harmonies’ – a great way to finish up the weekend!
