Joe-the-Birthday-Boy with His Lovely Jill
Sometimes you just luck out. Yesterday, betwixt and between the usual Saturday excursions, we were home to receive a phone call from Joe Hortzdovsky (sp??) inviting us to his birthday party! It was happening that very night! Of course, we said “yes!”
Joe is one of the nicest men I know – and among the handsomest, too. He is married to the lovely singer/songwriter Jill Trenholm. The party was happening at the Performing Arts Center in Long Beach and it almost goes without saying that it involved many musicians we know and love – Larry Murante, Scott Docherty, Mike Campellone for starters. We felt honored to be included.

And, of course, being the Peninsula, we knew most of the people there – a wonderful, eclectic mix of all ages. The food was fabulous (did I mention that, among her many talents, Jill is a magnificent cook) and the space was elegantly decorated (well, she’s an artist, too!). The visiting and eating and music were non-stop. It was fabulous fun!
I couldn’t help a little reflection, as I enjoyed the party. My son Charlie will be 60 in a few months – the same age as Joe. Bustling around helping with the food was Joe and Jill’s neighbor Bertel Gerke Smith who celebrated her eightieth not long ago. Also among the revelers was my Community Historian friend Maddie Dickerson Moore – young enough to be my granddaughter. How lucky we are to have friends across such a broad spectrum of ages and to be able to celebrate their milestones!
Happy Birthday, Joe! We had a great time!
Sydney, sounds like so much fun! Isn’t that wonderful that so many people were able to be there for your friends’ sixtieth!
So, you and Charlie both have the big Os this year! My eldest daughter and I had that last .year. She was 50 and promises to never grow up. As if I hadn’t noticed! Enjoy!
