Dahlias about to Bloom

Dahlias about to Bloom

For more than forty years, the dahlias in our garden have begun blooming in August. Not in July. And certainly not in June. But this crazy year, right in line with our Jean Marie rhododendrons in April, the dahlias are way, way early! Some are ready to burst forth within the week. Unbelievable!

I used to count on having dahlias available to decorate the church for the last several vesper services. That would be the end of August and the final Labor Day Weekend service. I wonder if there will be any this year. Maybe I should plant something else. Quick! Mums or asters or lilies. But wait… our lilies look almost ready, too!

On the other hand, I usually look forward to honeysuckle in June. So far this year… nada.   No sweet-smelling blossoms yet. The first vesper service is scheduled for Sunday, June 21st. Right now it looks like we’ll have foxglove and probably some hydrangeas.  Perhaps lupine.  And, those dahlias. What a strange year.
