The Bright Lights of Hollywood

Charlie (white shirt) and Cast

It was mighty cold and dark in Oysterville last night at eight o’clock.  Quiet, too.  I was thinking that my son Charlie had probably just stepped onstage in Hollywood – into the spotlight and, I hoped, in front of a packed house.  I hoped the laughter (the play is a comedy) was frequent and the applause was enthusiastic.  Mostly, I wished I could have been there.
The show, “Thanks for Coming and Thanks for Waiting” is in two acts and is playing this weekend only.  It’s a weekend that we had prior commitments big time here Oysterville with no opportunity to trek eleven hundred miles south.  I will be feeling badly about that for a long time.
The show was originally scheduled for a weekend in November but, with less than a week before opening, the other male lead left the show.  No time to get another actor up to speed, so the show had to be postponed.  And Nyel and I had to give up our plan to go south.  Bummer!
We sent break-a-leg messages and flowers.  We heard from friends in Santa Cruz that they would be flying south for the opening.  My cousins in L.A. are planning to go.  They all say they will send a full report.  But, of course, it’s not the same…

Sorry you all are missing Charlie’s play, Sydney, but it wasn’t a good week to be traveling. I hope you get wonderful reports from the rest of the family and friends who didn’t have such a long trekk!
