One!

Well, we definitely owe at least one of our chickens a sincere apology.  Here we’ve been bad-mouthing those Ameracaunas for not earning their keep but maybe they have been all along.  We’ve been expecting blue eggs to appear, as advertised, but we’ve only been getting brown ones from the faithful Wyandottes.  Or so we thought.

Our soul-searching began yesterday when I discovered not one, not two, but three eggs in the nest boxes – two in the center box and one in the north box.  Unless one of those ladies laid two eggs in one day, which we seriously doubt, one of the Ameracaunas also laid an egg. Or maybe both Ameracaunas laid eggs.

The problem is that all three eggs were brown.  Ameracaunas are known for laying blue eggs just like their Aracauna cousins.  Granted, these Ameracaunas may not be “pure bred” and maybe they have a dominant brown egg gene.  That’s what I’m wondering now.

After collecting yesterday’s bounty and praising all the girls equally (what else could I do?), I did a little more research.  I didn’t find out anything about the Ameracauna-brown-egg-laying possibility but I did learn that they are “early” layers, as in they start young.  So now I really feel guilty.  Maybe these brown eggs we’ve been getting for the last five or six weeks have all been from the Ameracaunas.

I’ve been scolding those two girls relentlessly about their slackardly ways.  I feel a little guilty about the possibility of misplaced blame.  But how do you apologize to a chicken?

And I’ve been wondering how many other erroneous judgments I’ve made in life based on the superficial evidence and incorrect information.  More than an egg carton full, for sure.
