Sunny. Clear skies. Breeze from the north. 88° on our porch. It couldn’t have been better watching conditions and so we set up our chairs on the side of the road and did just that. Yesterday was Day One of the 2014 Rod Run to the end of the World and naturally that meant that the rods were coming through Oysterville!
The last time we were in town for the cruise through Oysterville was in 2011. That time the rods paraded north to south through the village and the photo ops weren’t quite as good – at least, not by my standards. From our vantage point, the cars were across the street and it was the little green Driscoll garage in the background.
This year the route brought the cars into the village from the south and it made all the difference! I didn’t even need to leave my chair to get photos of gorgeous cars with our dear old church in the background. Lovely! Of course, I’d be the first to admit that my pictures might have been more interesting if I’d gotten my bones up and changed angles now and then… But, as I say, it was 88°!
Nyel had fixed a pitcher of lemonade. I brought out the ice bucket and extra glasses. We had more chairs at the ready. And, the neighbors gathered – first, Betsy; then Bhima (Greg’s dog); then Sue with her dog, Ursa. (Bhima and Ursa were having a play date at Sue’s, but Bhima got distracted by the rods, of course. Typical guy thing.)
A few tourists parked near the church and came over to ask questions: “How do you pronounce Tsako-te-hahsh-eetl?” (She borrowed a pencil to write it down phonetically.) “What does it mean?” (She wrote that down, too.)
Mark-from-next-door and his son Aaron came out later – Mark, interested in the cars but two-year-old Aaron, more intrigued by the candy that wass being tossed to us. A few minutes after closing time at the Oysterville Store, Greg joined us – on his way to pick up Bhima. Greg had treats (for the humans, but maybe for the dogs, too) with him. So we sat a while longer, even though the parade had sort of petered out.
It was a perfect Saturday afternoon in Oysterville.
That was so good it warranted a short video clip. Ask Anne DeMarken about what would be best for you. You have an iPhone or the like?
