Okay. I admit it. I was undoubtedly sucked into all the hype about this new version of “Poldark” that’s airing on Masterpiece Theater. I’ve seen the first two episodes and may stick it out for one more. But, thus far anyway, it’s leaving me in the dark. Literally.
Presumably, the sets and costumes are fabulous – a don’t miss period piece. And Aiden Turner is a too-die-for hunk – or so they say. I’m not disputing any of that but so far my jury is out. I just haven’t seen enough to make a judgement. It’s one of those shot-in-the-dark-to-create-a-mood flicks. Or at least that’s how it seems to me. But the mood that it leaves me in is one of frustration. I can’t bloody see what’s happening.
“Deadwood” (different period, different hunk) was like that. Two episodes and I was through. Not worth my time. I’d rather read the CliffsNotes. Nyel stuck it out for one or two more but finally came to the same conclusion. What in the world is the allure of so-dark-you-can’t-see-it?
I’m actually a big fan of period pieces. Especially English ones. I was an “Upstairs Downstairs” fan and a “Downton Abbey” fan and I’ve seen all the versions of the Jane Austen novels. It’s the costumes and sets that I love, not necessarily the content – especially in Jane’s case. I never could get into her books – could care less about all the manners and drivel of the early 19th century. But let me watch some of the dancing from that period, and I am entranced.
I wonder how the costumers and makeup artists and set designers feel about “Poldark.” All that work and just a peek now and then. But maybe it will get better. Next week will tell the tale (so to speak), at least for me.
Sydney, I’m a fan of most of the period English shows as well, and am in agreement with you on “Poldark”. However, this last episode didn’t hold my attention enough to keep me from drifting off to sleep…
