We were just headed out the door yesterday morning, when the phone rang. Nyel answered and handed me the receiver. “It’s ABC,” he said. Wow!
Their news crew was on their way to the peninsula said a voice named Eloise, and they would like to interview me regarding my story about Verna Oller. Cool!
“I’m sorry, but I won’t be in until late this afternoon,” I told her.
“Perfect,” said Eloise. “We’ll be at your house at 4:30. Do you have a street address?”
On the way to Astoria, I checked in with the Observer. “Oh, good, we’ve been looking all over for you,” I was told. “ABC wants to interview you this afternoon…” It’s for real!
We met a friend for lunch, slogged through our errands, and made it home with an hour to spare – just enough time to stow the groceries, vacuum the carpet, and refresh the bouquet on the dining room table. Whew!
At 4:10 the phone rang. They were running a little late at their first stop but not to worry. They had only one more place to visit before Oysterville and then they’d be here. Maybe in an hour. And by the way, it’s probably going to be on the “Diane Sawyer Nightly News” not “Good Morning America.” Whatever.
By 6:00 I was wondering whether to start dinner when the phone rang again. Out of time. Sorry. Won’t make it to Oysterville. Bummer!
Well, we’ve always known it’s a long way to Oysterville… but it’s tough when you make the cutting room floor even before you’ve been filmed!

Drats! So close! I’m bummed too. The closest I’d ever get to my 15 minutes of fame would be knowing someone who was interviewed for Diane Sawyer.
