Of weather, the world wide web, and other weighty wonders…

Eleven of us gathered around the library fireplace last evening, glad of the warmth and the Friday night companionship.  Topics of discussion ranged from progress on the Wachsmuth house construction to potential pot growing problems in Pacific County.

With regard to the latter subject, newly elected County Commissioner Frank Wolfe talked a little about the difficulties in meshing federal, state and county laws.  Definitely a work in progress.  What I got out of it all was don’t invest in grow lights yet.  And, during that discussion, of course, came speculation as to marketing possibilities for Tokeland…

On a more serious note, we compared our frustrating moments with internet access during the week just past.  Those nine of us who live on the north end all had similar experiences which seemed to point to mega CenturyLink problems.  It was one of those ‘misery loves company’ discussions and will no doubt crop up again, hopefully not soon.

And, of course, the weather was a topic.  We had all awakened to heavy frost yesterday morning – the first really white blanketing of the season.  “Twenty-two degrees in Klipsan last night,” Teresa Millner told Nyel yesterday when he stopped in at the Planter Box to pick up chicken feed.  We weren’t sure if the power outage in Klipsan was weather related.

This morning there is no evidence of frost here in Oysterville,  but Mike’s Long Beach Weather site says it’s currently (at 7:00 a.m.) 27.7° F and “uncomfortably cold.”  On the plus side, we’re going to have some sun today and very little wind with temperatures rising to 42 degrees.  A perfect day to pull on knit hat and mittens and go for a walkabout — maybe even get a tour of the Wachsmuth place and view the progress from the inside!  Now that’s what I call a “Fine Winter Day in Oysterville” to look forward to.

It is clear, sunny, and crisp in Gig Harbor, too! I love it. Everything looks fresh, like the year, and dreaming of Spring. Soup in the crockpot tonight we are all home and snug. Enjoy your walk, Sydney. I look forward to reading about it.

    Hi Sydney,
Speaking of Tokeland, I was surprised that you were not hip to “420” since the reference to smoking pot originated at your alma mater, San Rafael High (albiet after you had graduated). Please keep blogging, and I’m looking forward to a “420” story on April 20, 2013. Check out: and also Wikipedia for 420. Aloha nui, Sally

Sally, thanks for a good chuckle! I graduated from San Rafael High School in 1953 and didn’t hear the term “pot” until nearly twenty years later. I don’t think I’d ever even tasted anything alcoholic until I was in college. I do remember being quite shocked at hearing of Robert Mitchum’s arrest in 1948 or so for smoking marijuana which, in my innocent twelve-year-old-mind was something terrible akin to whisky-or-heroin-whatever-they-were. And all that aside, how did you surmise from my blog that I am not “hip to 420”? I think you and I must be separated by at least a full generation — maybe two. Thanks for being in touch but don’t hold your breath about a blog to do with 420 on April 20th!
