October on Territory Road

     Bright blobs of color have suddenly appeared along the verges of Territory Road – brilliant orange against the green grass.  The Great Pumpkin has made his pre-Halloween visit for the second year in a row – a cheerful reminder that Fall is here and Halloween is on its way.
     Thus far, there are few other signs of the season.  We’ve had many mild, sunny days and only a few days of gentle rain.  It hasn’t been cold enough for the leaves to do any serious turn toward golds and reds.  There has been a bit of wind but not enough yet to strip the trees.  Not a single one of our late-season apples has fallen from a branch.
     So, each time I see the pumpkins dotting the road, I am taken unawares once again.  It seems too soon.  Not enough days have marched by.  Have they?  Why is it, as we age, that the days and months and years grow shorter?   Just when I think I’m getting the hang of it all, I don’t seem to have enough time to savor the moments.
     Maybe it has something to do with Einstein’s relativity theory.  Or with a shrinking or expanding universe theory.  I guess my own, personal theory is that, as the years have galloped forward, I’ve continually added people and things and places and events to my list of ‘musts.’  I want to know them all, visit them all.  I want to do it all.  Impossible?  No doubt.  Meanwhile, all those pumpkins are a wonder to behold!  Thanks, Bradley!
