Nothing but blue skies…

Looking Up!

“…and not a cloud in the sky!”  It’s not often that you can make that statement here in Oysterville – or anywhere along the northwest coast, for that matter.  Moist Marine Air is the name of the game.
Sometimes the clouds are lower and we call them ‘fog’ or ‘mist.’   Sometimes they are higher and we call them ‘cloud cover’ or just plain ‘clouds.’  You don’t often hear anyone identify them as ‘cumulus’ or ‘nimbus’ or any of those other terms we learned in fifth grade science.
But yesterday was unusual.  There truly was not a cloud in the sky until on toward evening when the fog began rolling in from the west.  Our houseguests went over to the ocean after dinner so that the boys could play in the sand one more time before heading homeward this morning.  They left here under blue skies and came back an hour and a half later bringing that familiar soft, gray haze.
Today, we woke up to overcast skies, as well.  On this kind of morning I can almost see my dad looking out our west windows and saying, “It’s going to be a beautiful day!  This will all  burn off by eleven o’clock.”
     And usually he was right!
