Yesterday’s first email brought the welcome news from my editor that Legendary Locals of the Long Beach Peninsula is “in production.” There are two important implications inherent in that information: 1) I can actually think about other things for the next ten to fifteen weeks until the proofs arrive for correction; and 2) I can show off the cover which is always the first thing to be completed and which I’ve had for two months now.
Like all the covers in this particular Arcadia Publishing series, it shows fifteen legendary locals – fifteen out of the almost three hundred pictured in the book! Although I had some input as to which photographs I’d like to see on the cover, the choice was essentially Arcadia’s. I think they did well.
The mix includes seven men and eight women. Of those pictured, eight are still living and each of the fifteen is “legendary” for a different reason. It’s a bit light on ethnic diversity, but then so is (and has been) our population. All-in-all, I’m quite pleased with it and am eager to hear what others think.
A cover, of course, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg and is meant to entice folks to look further and, hopefully, to buy the book. Will this one fulfill its mission? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, I have a bit of a respite and right at the best time, too. Even if Arcadia whips through their production schedule in ten weeks, I have until well after Christmas and perhaps on into February before the next step.
I’m told that, once the proofs arrive, I’ll have seven days to make any adjustments or corrections to the text. I’m not sure how long after that the book will actually be published, but I’m thinking a Spring book-signing is probably in the offing. Sounds good to me…
I recognize some of those folks (including your Uncle Willard), but who all made the cover, hint hint?
I’m not sure what you mean. This picture IS the cover. Or are you asking me to identify the folks you don’t know? Sorry — you’ll have to wait until the book comes out! This is just a teaser…

Heard you on the radio yesterday as I drove along, Sydney. At first I thought, that voice sounds familiar, as I changed to find some western music. The it dawned on me I KNEW that voice and went back and listened to you!
