Happy Birthday, Miss Amelia

Amelia and Friends

Little Miss Amelia Wachsmuth is two years old today!  We all hope that this auspicious occasion does not mark the onset of “the terrible twos.”  I can’t imagine that it will, though.  Amelia is the model of toddler decorum.  She is quiet, she looks at us with big eyes, and smiles shyly when we try to engage her in conversation.
We have known Amelia since she was only a few weeks old.  She visits Oysterville regularly with her parents and stays just a skip and a hop from our house at the cabin of her Oma and Opa, Carol and Tucker Wachsmuth.  And, since the time that she decided walking was the best way to see the town, she has been leading her loving adults past our house.
Unlike the other visiting children of her age, Amelia does not veer off to our gate with that do-not-pass-go determination to say “hello” to our chickens.  By the time she is abreast of our house, she has already spied the church and that is where she heads.  Amelia loves the church.  No matter who she is with or whether she is coming or going to another important destination, she must stop to go inside the church.
Amelia is much too young to realize the hope that blossoms forth in my heart as I watch her visits to that venerable old building.  I already think of her as the Oysterville Church Lady of the Future.  In my mind’s eye, when Amelia is my age she will be the one who is scheduling summer vespers programs and helping nervous brides settle on a wedding date.  Who will do the job in the intervening years is yet a mystery to me, but I definitely see that Amelia is an Oysterville Church Lady in training.  So, many happy returns of this day, Miss Amelia!  We’ll see you in church!

Amelia does *love* the Oysterville Church! She goes as often as she can and gets upset when she heads in the direction of the church and we bring her back. That’s a cute picture of her with Elmo. When she first saw him she said “Mooo!” Then I explained that it was a dog, and she was very excited to go pet him. I guess I need to take her to a farm to see a real “Moo.”
