Salmon – Oven Ready

DATELINE January 3, 2016: If I were to believe that whatever occurs on the first day of a new year sets the tone for the next twelve months, then I would say that 2016 is sure to be chock-full of friends and relatives and new acquaintances. All three of those categories were represented at our Friday Night Gathering on the first.

Yesterday and today are no exception. In fact, Cuzzin Ralph (from Virginia) and his sister Cheryl with husband Virg (from Lacey) arrived last evening and will be here through tomorrow! It’s their annual holiday visit and, as usual, they brought dinner – fresh salmon ready for the grill, a coleslaw salad, quinoa and brown rice, corn bread and, for dessert – pumpkin pie with whipped cream!! OMG! We ate until the bursting point. And then we had more! (I do hope that we can get a grip on that aspect of things before the year gets much older…)

And did I mention the visiting and the laughter and just the plain old warm glow of being with people you care about? If this is what 2016 has in store for us, I say, “Bring it on!” And, just think! It’s a Leap Year so we’ll have 366 days of fun instead of the usual 365!

Although I don’t make resolutions for each New Year – mostly because I can’t remember what they are by day ten or eleven – I often settle on a Letter for the Year. In 2011, for instance, it was P for projects, perseverance, publication, posterity, positive, And in 2012 it was A for abstinence (as with regard to eating and spending), for accomplishment (as in those never-ending projects), for acceptance and adaptability (with regard to the inevitable changes coming our way) and aspirations (as in without them, what would be the point?)

I think this year the letter needs to be “B.” Betwixt and between (ahem) all the visiting, I have the jail book to edit and, hard on its heels (do books have heels?), a new book idea burbling up and demanding my attention. Unfortunately, writing (at least for me) requires solitude – big chunks of it – and that’s what isn’t a part of this wall-to-wall-people equation.

So… it will be a busy year of setting boundaries and finding a balance. And don’t forget, when all is said and done, B is for books!! Woot! Woot!
