Ready and Waiting
I think Santa’s sleigh is stuck somewhere. In this age of instant, up-to-the-cyber-second communication, GPS locators, and other magical reindeer assists, it shouldn’t be a problem, right? But the phone call we got from one of the elves was so garbled that we not only can’t make a return call, but we don’t know who to make it to. Maddening!
It was a fairly short message and sounded as though it was coming from a cell phone that was continuously breaking up. The only understandable words were “wind up,” “P.O. Box 2” and eight digits, not necessarily consecutive, of a ten digit phone number. I think the call probably had to do with the stocking stuffers Santa traditionally brings to our house. I don’t know if he’s decided he needs more direction about our chimney location or if the problem is more basic – like the elves are behind in their production this year.
Wind-up Fun
Fortunately, there is a paper trail (well, actually, a cyber-trail) at this end and I’ve been able to send Mr. Claus a note asking for clarification. But it’s the weekend and I’m not sure if he has the workshop open around the clock at this time of year or not. In fact, I’m not even sure (what with all the outsourcing these days) whether the call came from his North Pole headquarters or from a workshop in an outlying area. It’s hard to tell with garble-talk.
When push comes to shove, though, it really doesn’t matter. We have accumulated enough wind-up toys over the years to keep us amused for this entire Christmas season and for many more to come. It’s not even the thought that the stockings will be a little slimmer this year. It’s just the annoying reality of our growing ‘dependence’ upon a techno-world that’s beyond our control… even when it comes to Santa Claus!
The quality of phone communication is going down hill. Dave could barely understand the folks at Sears. Maybe that’ s by design.
