D-Day in Oysterville!

D is for Deadline!  D is for Done!  D is for Delivery!  And today is the day that all of that will come true – with just the slightest bit of equivocation – for my Legendary Locals of the Long Beach Peninsula for Arcadia Publishing.

Regarding the “Deadline” – it isn’t actually today. According to my contract, it’s November 6th (which is etched in most of our brains as Election Day), but there are contingencies.  First of all, the book involves more than eight gigabytes of photographs so meeting this deadline is not a matter of a few computer clicks to send it all by email.  Rather, it entails transferring data to a flash drive and packaging it up to be snail-mailed to my editor in New Hampshire.  Which brings me to the “Delivery” part of things.

All along I’ve thought that if I mailed it November 1st or 2nd  it would get there in plenty of time, even with a weekend intervening.  But that was before Hurricane Sandy and a note from said editor that she is without power but can use her cell phone for emergency messages.  I’m not sure what all that means as far as mail delivery is concerned.  I’m hoping that the old, familiar words, “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” can stretch to include tidal surges and power outages.

As far as the “Done” aspect is concerned, is one ever?  I find that there are always tweaking needs, always another fact to revisit.  In this case, I’m still waiting for one crucial photograph from a man in Seattle.  If it doesn’t arrive today, maybe I can make a last-minute insertion at proof-reading time.  Or not.

I do wish that all these Ds added up to the Delights of Downtime without any of those pesky Doubts surfacing.  We shall see…

Wish you luck with the publication, Sydney. My latest was due out October 24. Now it looks like mid November. I’ll believe it when I see it.

A Delightful post, Sydney and I hope all goes well as your flash drive wings it way across the county. Take a deep breath and relax a little before you pursue your next project. I’ll be looking forward to having Legendary Locals in my hands!
