Linda's Shoes

As might be expected for a Fourth of July wedding, the color scheme was all about red, white, and blue.  The attendants, right down to the flower girl with the sparkly red and blue “body jewel” on her arm, were looking both festive and patriotic.

And the bride?  She wore the traditional white dress and carried a red, white, and blue bouquet.  Shoes of the brightest blue and with the highest, spikiest heels peeped out below her hemline.  They were smashing!

They were also uncomfortable, she confessed, and she found that walking on the lawn created a sinking-in problem.  (I had the fleeting thought that she could run around the yard for a while and our lawn would get a much-needed aerating.)  She also apologized for leaving divots all over our bedroom carpet where she and the ladies of the bridal party had dressed.

The divots, of course, were short-lived – not like those on the fir floors of our erstwhile Bay House.  That was ‘back in the day’ when I, too, was wearing spikey, high-heeled shoes.  And not just for dress-up, either!  I wore them almost every day to work.  I don’t remember them hurting, but I do remember that walking on grass was a problem.

Unlike the carpets in our current house, the floors in our Bay House were unforgiving.  “Have you been entertaining loggers?” Noel Thomas once asked, rather leeringly if I remember rightly.  I wonder if that patina of little tell-tale heel marks is still there…

Of course, the bride’s shoes, instead of being part of a patriotic theme, might have come under the heading of “something borrowed, something blue.”   And maybe there was an unseen red something that was borrowed.  I didn’t think to ask.
