Around the ‘hood in Oysterville

New House

Cyndy’s House

The last few days have been all about neighborhood things here in Oysterville.  Not big gatherings or get-togethers – just the ordinary pleasures of living in proximity with people you like.  On Saturday, for instance, we took time on our way to the post office to do a little snooping at Cyndy’s construction site.   What a marvelous house it is becoming!

The roofers have completed their part now (which means, I hope, that they will be at our place next to do the long awaited last portion of our roof) and we could really get a sense of the completed project.  We peeped inside and saw that the siding had recently been stained (dark!  Gorgeous!) and is awaiting installation.

I had the temerity, too, to walk uninvited into the living room and look out at the view of the bay.  I couldn’t help hoping that six months or a year from now Cyndy and I could be sitting in that very corner enjoying a cup of tea.  What a grand feeling to look forward to having neighbors who are already friends!

And speaking of such, as we left, we saw Carol Wachsmuth sitting on daughter Lina’s porch across the way.  We stopped to ask her how the clamming had gone the night before.  That led to five or ten minutes of conversation about this and that, all of us basking in the bright October sunshine.  Nyel and I both shared grateful thoughts that Carol and Tucker are full-time neighbors at last and will soon be moving into their newly expanded cabin.  (The next day we got a call from Tucker offering a mess of clams – cleaned! – which we had for dinner, oohing and aahing with every bite.)

Carol and Aunt Becky

Carol and “Aunt Becky”

Yesterday was a neighbor day of a little different variety.  We drove (actually, Nyel drove) Carol Nordquist up to St. Vincent’s and back for her second round of chemo.  Carol’s sister, “Aunt Becky,” was with us and we were in Carol’s spiffy Lexus – bigger and far more comfortable than our new little Prius-C, leading to the usual thoughts of “when I grow up, I’d like to have…”

The day was pleasant despite the nature of our errand.  It was grand to get to know another member of Carol’s family and to listen to the banter between the two of them.  We hope we’ll be called upon again, though we’ve heard that the line is forming in terms of ‘chauffeurs.’  As we drove back into town late yesterday afternoon, we all counted pumpkins from the ‘Y’ to our house.  So far so good, at least at our end of town.  Their glow in the fall sunlight was a fine welcome back home to the ’hood here at the south end of Oysterville.
