Our near neighbor Tucker Wachsmuth has the distinction of being the first to complete his application for Community Historian Project 2015. Woot! Woot! Here’s hoping many people follow his lead.

According to the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum’s website:
The Project consists of 15 weeks of classes, speakers, tours, demonstrations and opportunities. The experience you receive from participating in this project is intended to provide you with the knowledge, contacts and ability to become a resource and pass on your historical knowledge to visitors, groups and other community members.

Community Historian Field Trip 2014

The Community Historian Project meets each Wednesday from 9:30 – noon from January through mid-April (this year, January 14th – April 22nd). ‘Home Base’ is the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco, although there will be short field trips for hands-on and feet-on-the-ground experiences. Participants will have unique opportunities to learn Pacific County history, through access and exposure to historical experts, topics, sites and research.

The goal of the Community Historian Project is to develop a cohesive group of knowledgeable people, who can be called upon for information and who can become a heritage resource to their communities… Participants are encouraged to develop a personal project that can be researched during the course. Recent projects have included an exhibition on the keepers of North Head Lighthouse, research on the Ilwaco, Railway and Navigation Company, and a project to map the historic community of Bear River among others.

I can absolutely and unequivocally attest to that networking part of the program — those “who can be called upon for information and who can become a heritage resource…”. I cannot say how many times I have “called upon” one of the ‘graduates’ with a particular research question of my own to say nothing of those who have contacted me with bits and pieces of information they thought would be of interest in my work.

The Community Historian Project is entering its 3rd year. I’m looking forward to participating, once again, in this exciting endeavor. The application deadline is December 19th and the form can be downloaded from the CPHM site at http://columbiapacificheritagemuseum.org/. Here’s hoping to see you at that first session on January 14th!
