Not So Long Ago: Flowers Bordering a Green Lawn

Even though the calendar says we have ten days to go, it’s summer here in Oysterville. I know that because of our lawn. It is suddenly that yucky yellow-green-soon-to-be-brown. A Summer Lawn at the Beach.

One day it was green and lush. The next day yellow and yuck. And it’s not even hot out here on the coast. Pleasant and misty-moisty in the morning; sunny but not hot in the afternoon. However, it’s obviously time to drag out those hoses and begin watering from dawn to dusk if we want any semblance of ‘lawn.’ Or we could just say the heck with it and go with the low maintenance beach look. The jury is out on that issue so far.

Fortunately, we have a well that is dedicated to ‘irrigation’ as our Oysterville Water Company people term out-of-doors usage. So, we aren’t putting a strain on our community water supply and we aren’t unnecessarily racking up our water bill — just our electric bill from running the (also dedicated) pump.

Today’s Lawn: Yellowing Up For Summer

Unfortunately, though, we do not have an automatic sprinkling system which we would both dearly love (think of the British meaning of the ‘dear’ in dearly, though). As it is, in order to cover the area enough to keep all that grass green, we need to move the sprinklers every few hours. It’s a drag in all senses of the word. I mentally file it under the category, “Exercise Program,”  along with those other garden chores.  And now that Nyel is walking with less difficulty, I count on him to help.

I console myself with thoughts of croquet and boules and visiting kids playing catch out on the green, green grass. Well… it has happened in the past. And it could happen again! In fact, it seems like it was just last summer which, of course, was… all of a sudden ago.
