A Sack Full of Promises

All along the west fence north of our house are teeny tiny green daffodil sprouts.  They are so small that some are successfully hiding behind blades of grass.  But, look closely and they are there!  Spring is on its way and never mind that there is a healthy skim of ice on the winter pond behind the church!

I remember the day Nyel planted those daffodil bulbs.  November was already well under way and I was concerned that it was late to get them in the ground.  I worry about things like directions-on-the-sack and proper timing.  Farmer Nyel seems to go more by the feeling in his bones, and he is invariably right.

When I mentioned my daffodil sightings to Neighbor Bradley (who has planted literally thousands of bulbs over the past few years), he said matter of factly, “Oh yes.  Mine will be coming up on February 3rd – three weeks from now.”  OMG!  He knows that?  I was so stunned that I didn’t ask him if he meant they would be just “up” or actually blooming.  Knowing Bradley, probably the latter.

I’m sure there are analogies to be made here – about faith, for instance.  It’s very clear that, of the three of us, I am the Doubting Thomas.  On the other hand, I am the one who is absolutely childlike (or is that senile?) in my excitement when promises come true.  Or maybe it’s a guy/girl thing…

Spring is on its way!  The crocuses are in evidence!  The camellias are in bud!  Daffy-down-Dilly is coming to town!
