The leak is back in the middle of the kitchen. Not a bad leak; just the plunk…plunk…plunk kind. It comes from a seam in the beadboard overhead and no one can seem to find its source. The attic above is totally dry. Since it only happens when the wind is directly from the west, we think it has something to do with the eaves on that side of the house. Probably where that mother swallow tucks in to nest every spring.
On the east side of the house, our big camellia is in tatters. The deer people have been munching at all the leaves they can reach which just happen to be all the places I’ll be able to reach when the buds blossom out next month. Damn! It’s definitely time to get out the deer repellent but it seems hopeless and useless to spray that expensive deterrent in this ever-present drizzle.
But, to balance all of that soggy, depressing news, I’m happy to report that our House Concert yesterday was a resounding success. Musician/songwriter Jill Trenholm was a delight and our audience absolutely loved her. The food was delicious– even better than ever, but how could that be? — and the entire evening got rave reviews.
We are still aglow, drips and deer nearly forgotten, as we get ready to head for California tomorrow. Our books-on-tape are in the car. Our suitcases are almost packed. And our chicken-sitter is ready to take charge.
I’m full of eager anticipation as I always am when a trip is in the offing. Nyel, not so much. But he usually warms up to it once we are on the road. Actually, we hope we both warm up, literally, as we head south. And sunny skies would be such a bonus!

If it’s not the eaves, maybe the siding and running across to your kitchen. In any event the drip was not noticable and didn’t dampen the festivities! Linda was enchanted. Not only did we have to buy her one of Jill’s CDs, but we came back to Ilwaco and watched YouTube videos of her. Safe journey, Sydney and Nyel and thank you for being such wonderful hosts, even to a six-year-old who accidentally gets locked in the bathroom!
Please tell Miss Linda that she was the perfect House Concert guest. She is invited to come back anytime!
bummer about the leak. Kind of mysterious….
Are you thinking “Mrs. Crouch?”
I’m sorry about the leak, it is worry-some. We have had success with automatic deer repellents. They are basically a motion sensor activated sprinkler, they harm nothing and are environmentally beneficial! I think that the sudden activation frightens the deer more than anything.
Have a great trip Sydney and Nyel. Jean and John report that Hawaii is WONDERFUL right now.
Possibly….weeping perhaps…..
Don’t mention it to Larry… He’d have to write another song!
Head reisi! (hey-ahd ray-see) (good travels in Estonian)
Sydney and Nyel,
Have a great trip. I am jealous of the sun you will see. Not so much the leak. I think the eaves and any little hole in them will cause a leak somewhere. Been there.
Bon Voyage! We’ll miss your daybook – or will you post from the road??
Sorry to have missed Jill Trenholm’s concert — if only I could magically appear in Oysterville now and then without the long drive, I’d attend every event. (Your house has been a gathering place for many generations. I know it’s no small task to host these house concerts. I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate the fact that you share the house with the rest of us and go to so much trouble for our enjoyment.) See you next month. Have a great trip. Safe home!
We saw her at the Raven and Finch this summer. She’s great!
