A little bit like being dead?

saturdayeveningpost.com article 2017

Like 191 other households at the north end of the Peninsula, we have been without landline and internet service for the past thirteen days.  That number includes homes in the village of Oysterville plus all other CenturyLink customers north of the Oysterville Road.    But, I’m delighted to say that, as of 1:00 this morning, we are up and running once more!  Let the Oysterville Daybook resume!

Several people noticed that my blog wasn’t showing up as it has every day since 2008.  At least two of those people contacted Bonus Daughter Marta in California who told them what was going on.  Otherwise, if anyone noticed  — which most people we’ve talked to, so far, have said that they hadn’t — they drew their own conclusions.  Perhaps they thought we were on vacation.  Perhaps they thought Nyel was back in the hospital and we were in Portland or Seattle again.  Perhaps (and most likely) they didn’t think about it at all.

Our (also off-the-grid) neighbor saw our County Commissioner somewhere or other, early on.  He lives a couple of miles or so south of us and, when asked, wasn’t sure if he, himself, had landline/internet service or not.  Nor could he say what the County did in such cases — as in what of people who had no other phone service?  How could they contact 911?  What strategic plan is there for county residents in such a circumstance?  Does CenturyLink notify County authorities so that emergency services can kick in?  Surely there is a “plan” in place?

We waited and combed through the next two (count ’em TWO) issues of the Chinook Observer.  Presumably, they didn’t know, either, of these 192 CenturyLink customers who were without service.  Not a word of our predicament was mentioned.  From our standpoint, it felt a little like being dead…  You know.  Outta sight, outta mind; off the grid, off the planet.

CenturyLink was more forthcoming than I’d have given them credit for, if you had patience to wait through all the robo-response nonsense.  There had been a fire, a live voice finally said,  and some essential equipment had been burned up.  It would take some time to replace it.  Maybe until the end of the week we were told on Day One or Two.  By the end of the week they were saying it would be by the end of the following week.  And by that time they said “maybe within sixteen hours.”

Sure enough!  We are back!  I wonder if anyone will notice…

We seem to be on-again, off-again. Maybe “the new normal?”
Thanks for missing my blog. I feel like I don’t have much to say these days, though…

I don’t know if your 191 count includes us folk south of Oysterville Rd, but we’ve been feeling the pain on V Place for the last two weeks with you. You were a lot more successful than I in getting an explanation for it though. However as of this am, all seems back to normal.

I’m not sure who all those numbers include either, Joy. Plus I’m not 100% sure they are accurate. I think that Laura at the Oysterville P.O. is the one who said “191 or 192.” I’m sure it wasn’t CenturyLink! We are still having periodic outages. Be sure you call and tell them exactly how long you were out and ask what compensation they will make on your bill. They seem to be “all over the place” in the credit they are giving…

Did you get to have your booster shots?

    Glad you’re “back”.

Yes, indeed! We are boosted and feeling good about it. However, we are still being mindful — which is probably the watchword of the past, present, and future. It was great to hear from you, Rosemary, and to know that you are doing okay! I think of you often and am glad to know you are still reading my blog and “keeping up” with Oysterville!
      Love, Sydney
