- Vespers Sign
This afternoon the Music Vespers sign will return to our garage for another year. We should have it repainted but it will probably be one of those out-of-sight, out-of-mind things that our garage is full of. In fact, we should probably call it “The Garage of Good Intentions.”
I often remember reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Farmer Boy to my class and how impressed I was as the efficient use of time she described. In winter, the whole family repaired and prepared – working on all those indoor projects that would ready them for another planting and growing season. So efficient! So prudent! And it sounded so easy.
Every year, I vow to work on all our “when I have time” projects. In summer, it’s doing some serious work in the garden. In winter, it’s going through those boxes of treasures that should have been thrown out a couple of moves ago.
And that’s to say nothing of chairs that need to be re-caned (who does that nowadays?) and the old clocks that need repairing. They aren’t things that I can or want to do, myself, but just getting them someplace to someone who can repair them seems to get put on hold year after year.
So today, another Vespers season closes at the church. It’s the last three-day weekend of summer and school is about to begin. I should probably start thinking about Christmas cards or at least updating my address book. (It seems to me I began doing that very chore last year, but I only got to the ems before life got in the way once again.)
Well, never mind. The day is dawning bright and clear – a perfect day for the Williams Family Reunion. And then there’s Vespers to attend and that new writing project to begin… With a little luck I’ll even find time to dead-head the daisies.
I was with you all the way, nodding my head, “Yes,” until you mentioned Christmas cards. I am still hyperventilating!!
Sydney: Do I detect a bit of Andy Rooney’s style in today’s blog? I transformed reading using your voice into reading using Andy’s voice. Amazing, and Grace also. Wish I were in O’Ville (again).
Lordy, Lordy! I hope not! I’m sure you mean it as a compliment and, truth to tell, I like Andy Rooney, too — but as you know, the ultimate desire of any writer is to have their own voice heard. I’d hate to think that I am using someone else’s, no matter whose.
“The Garage of Good Intentions” — I love it. For me right now, all that #@! is spread out on my bedroom floor, and I’m picking away at it. I don’t think I should call it “The Bedroom of Good Intentions” though. The school district may fire me over that!
You make me laugh right out loud!
I love the “Garage of Good Intentions” and Linda’s comment, too! I’m sorry to have not made it to vespers this summer. I intended to for the last one, but my schedule with my mother didn’t work. I will have to call it Vespers of My Good Intensions and we all know where that road leads.
