The Promise of Good Things to Come

     Back in mid-March when our apple trees began to blossom, I worried that this year they were too early for the bees.  I was pretty sure that we wouldn’t have a very good crop of apples but, once again, I was wrong and Mother Nature came through!   It looks like we’ll have plenty of good apple eating toward the end of summer.
     And speaking of apples, I recently read this quote by George Bernard Shaw: If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple.  But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.  I love that!  And it immediately made me think about some of the other apple quotations and expressions I know:
        An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
        The apple does not fall far from the tree.
        One bad apple spoils the barrel.
        As American as Mom and apple pie.
        He’s the apple of my eye.
    And this from Carl Sagan:      If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.
    Finally, there is the Johnny Appleseed song that my ‘Red House Cousins” sing every Thanksgiving before they begin their meal:
       Oh, the Lord’s been good to me.
       And so I thank the Lord
       For giving me the things I need,
       The sun, the rain and the appleseed.
       Oh, the Lord’s been good to me.
