- It’s A Wrap!
Yesterday Nyel went through the big doors marked Surgical Area at the Ocean Beach Hospital and came out two and a half hours later with a new rotating platform knee made of titanium, stainless steel and plastic – “the next best thing to what God provides us,” according to his surgeon. Nyel is looking forward to getting to know this bionic miracle; his original one was pretty much destroyed from years of osteoarthritis and he is eager to say goodbye to pain.
As I understand it, the shinbone of his left leg was resurfaced with a metal tray topped with a ‘medical-grade’ plastic spacer which now becomes the artificial cartilage for the new knee. An area at the bottom of his thighbone was also resurfaced with a rounded metal piece and all of the parts were measured and fitted to the nearest millimeter. Some sort of super glue keeps it all in place.
The cane that Nyel has been using in recent months is now on standby. In the weeks ahead, he will be dealing with physical therapy, using a walker, and putting up with Sydney’s Friendly Chauffeuring service. By the time he can use that cane once more, complete recovery will be in sight. Hooray for modern medicine!

My uncle recently at his second knee replacement at St. Pete’s in Olympia and has had a quick recovery. Better than the first time several years ago. I hope Nyle is dancing a jig soon.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes! So far, so good. As you might expect, he is a good patient. We are hoping to have him back home Sunday or Monday.
I got a new knee several years ago – one of the best things I’ve ever done. Make sure he is hanging in with all the physical therapy – I did mine faithfully and have great range of motion. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

I can just imagine how difficult it will be for Nyel to be the care receiver. He always seems to be tending to the needs of all of the rest of us. Well, Nyel, I hope you can lay back and let the care begin. Your turn! Hope you’re back in the driver’s seat asap, pain-free.
