Just when I think I’m up to speed…

Insert Tab 'A' into Slot 'B'?

In this warp speed era in which we find ourselves, it doesn’t pay to get complacent, even for a minute.  Just when I’ve grown relaxed about operating TV remotes or feeling competent at my computer keyboard, some other dire event occurs and I am lost in cyberspace once again.  The biggest problem, as I see it, is that these occurrences make me doubt my competency and intelligence.
I’ve never been especially secure along those lines, anyway.  I’m not one to dive into an argument or a heated discussion based on the secure feeling that I have all the facts firmly in my mind.  Mostly I operate on gut feelings and a modicum of understanding.  In this new-age techno-world, modicums are no longer enough.
This morning, for instance, I got to my computer a little later than usual and found that it was busy.  As in “I decided to start without you, Sydney.”
It then abruptly turned itself off, but not before flashing a rather petulant message that seemed to be accusing me of something and asking me to do something else.  I didn’t have time to get much more than an impression of what it said – something about “recovery” and, I thought, about how to “save work that might be lost.”
Next the screen went blank and there was humming.  I swear that it was the theme from “The Wizard of Oz” which was probably a subtle hint that I should immediately turn myself and my computer over to the cyberspace gurus.  (Like we have a substantial cadre those here in Oysterville!)  I’ve not always had a lot of luck with that option… so I waited awhile for Ms. Computer Sassy Pants to get over herself.
Things seem to be up and running normally for the nonce but I’m not going to relax for awhile yet.  Along the lines of things happen in threes, we’ve already had the news this week that we need a new hot water heater and a new heating system.  A new computer is not even a glimmer on the far-distant horizon of possibilities.
And, once again I feel mystified and inept and out of control with regard to my surroundings.  It’s easy to understand why a lesser mortal would lapse into thoughts about conspiracy theories…
