Next Attraction: Leftovers!

     The day after Thanksgiving has always been a favorite around our house.  It’s a day of puttering and noshing and reviewing – a lazy day after the bustle of preparing for the festivities of turkey day.
     This year we have houseguests so the morning will begin with Nyel’s breakfast specialty – sourdough waffles! – and then our weekend garage sale will begin.  Even so, it should be a lazy day here in Oysterville.  Not like the frantic “Black Friday” frenzy the media has been hyping for the last few weeks.  Thank goodness!
     Heading our list of things to be thankful for is that we are well off the beaten path.  Rampant consumerism needn’t affect us any more than any other reality show on TV.  We doubt very much that people will be lined up this morning waiting for our garage door to open.  In fact, we wonder if anyone will come at all.  Perhaps the peninsula population left en masse for those midnight sales in the big cities.
     Our garage sale is a direct result of our clean-out-a-box-every-rainy-day-rule which we instigated a few months ago.  We determined that we would get rid of all the unused and unwanted treasures cluttering up the nooks and crannies of our life.  What we don’t sell this weekend will be donated to Good Will or to a thrift store or to a charitable organization.  (I should point out that I would have cut right to the chase on this part of the clean-out process, but Nyel really, truly likes to do garage sales.)
     It never occurred to us that we might be competing with Black Friday.  In fact, as non-consumers-to-the-max, the term ‘Black Friday’ has only just begun to permeate our consciousness – and not in a good way.  Maybe it’s a generational thing.
     Turkey sandwiches!  A good book!  Watching the highest tide of the year come in and go out.  That’s about all I want to think about on this day.  For me, it’s Afterglow Friday – nothing black about it.
