Snow on Trees

     As the “Shoalwater Shenanigans” performance day grows ever closer, the uncertainties of live theater loom larger.  Some actors are still learning lines.  The search for appropriate costume pieces continues.  Small health issues become worrisome.
     Many of these uncertainties, of course, assume more critical proportions in a small community production.  We don’t have the expertise of professionals or the luxury of a huge costume department or the assurance that an understudy stands in the wings.  As a matter of fact, when we are performing at the Oysterville Church, there are no wings.
     And, in this particular show, there is also the uncertainty of the audience.  Space is limited and the decision was made early on that the performance would be free – no ticket sales.  There is no way of knowing whether there will be standing-room-only or just a smattering of people in attendance.  Will most people try to get to the matinee at 3:00 or will they come for the 7:00 candlelight performance?
     Add to that mix the weather.  The forecast for November 19^th is snow mixed with rain.  Thank goodness there is heat in the church!  But parking along the street may cause some long walks through the wet and dark.  Will people brave the elements?  Will they remember their flashlights?
     All of these uncertainties streak unbidden through my thoughts at odd times during the drippy daylight hours or in wakeful moments in the pitchy dark.  I imagine that some cast members are actually looking forward to the challenges.  Me?  Not so much.  But, perhaps I’ll learn the secret of their equanimity… before Saturday!
