of shingles, shekels, and shelter…

Fun in the Sun

We are in the midst of a roofing project at our house and our living room and library smell delicious!  There were many comments about the fragrance by our Friday night regulars.
“Like being inside a hope chest,” said Kay.
“Ooooh, no!  That’s like being inside a coffin,” said Gordon.  “I think it smells like the cedar grove on Long Island.”
Whatever.  Even though I love the smell, it’s the ka-ching ka-ching sound of a cash register that I hear while the crew is working overhead.  We have a lot of roof and, because we are in the National Historic District of Oysterville, we cannot change our roofing material to something less expensive or more long-lasting.  The house has always been roofed with cedar shingles and so it must continue.
Fortunately, we are only having to replace the shingles on the south-facing pitches right now.  The north sides are still good for awhile says our roofer.  I’m not sure how long “awhile” is, but I know we’ll hunker down feeling a lot more secure during next winter’s storms.  And, hopefully, for the next and the next winters, as well.
