- Breakfast in Bed
It’s bad enough to have an appointment in Astoria at 6:45 in the morning. It’s even worse to have to ask a neighbor to drive you there. It means starting from Oysterville at 5:45 while it’s still dark and cold and, yesterday, stormy.
But, with Nyel confined to the use of one arm – and the wrong arm at that given our manual transmission – and me scheduled for eye surgery and cautioned to bring an adult capable of driving me home, there was only one good option. The gods were smiling, however.
I had done the same favor for this very neighbor only two weeks ago. Not only had she agreed to take me, she has acted as my ‘cataract mentor’ for all the pre-op drops and do’s and don’ts. Plus she’s a nurse. How lucky can you get?
We were back home, fait de complet, by 11:30 a.m. which included two hours coming and gong, an errand at CostCo for Carol and a stop at the Oysterville Post Office for all of us. The actual surgery took only fifteen or twenty minutes.
For an hour and a half beforehand, I was prepped and pampered – even dressed in a paper gown that they filled with warm air with a hose thingamajig that hooked up a lot like our vacuum cleaner bag! Heaven! I want one of those here at home for the days when the wind whistles around the house and we can’t get the indoor temperature much higher than 54º.
Afterward, eye patch in place, I was treated to coffee and a sweet roll and released to Carol and Nyel’s solicitous custody. The jury is still out as to whether I will see better. The doctor says there should be “good improvement.” So far, life is a blur but I am hopeful.
Tomorrow morning we return for a post-op check-up and then move quickly on to Portland for Nyel’s shoulder post-op appointment and stitch removal. My eye surgeon suggested strongly that I might want to wait another day before driving so Carol, bless her heart, has offered to do chauffeur duty for the second day in a row. We owe her big time! I wonder how many farm fresh eggs it will take to repay this debt?
I suspect while eggs would be welcome that repaying only requires a thank you.
When it rains it pours! Feel better and hats off to Carol. See you next weekend!
