When I was ten years old and had a much greater confidence in my own opinions, “you can’t hate something that can’t hate you back” was a mantra of major proportions. I remember saying it (in tones of great wisdom) to my friend Trudy when she declared that she hated the bologna sandwiches her mother packed for her lunch. And I remember yelling it across the street to a neighbor kid who had just told me he hated my curly hair!
It was about that same time period that we (the ten-year-old-set) also made the converse statement substituting the word ‘love’ for ‘hate.’ We had all the bases covered, for sure. Life was pretty straightforward in those days – either black or white, just like the snapshots that I took with my Kodak Brownie Box Camera. I’m not sure when things became more complicated. Probably about the time that everyone’s hormones began raging.
That’s when the ‘love/hate relationship’ began to surface. It’s never really gone away. Not in all these years. But, nowadays, I’m likely to fall back on that particular descriptor when it comes to my interactions with modern-day technology. Make that technology devices. In particular, this week anyway, my computer.
She’s new – barely a month out of the box. She’s faster than the speed of sound and can do everything but cook and sew. Up until day before yesterday, I had no complaints at all. I was absolutely sure she could love me back. But then, on Wednesday morning, things took an unexpected turn and I discovered that Dellilah has a mind of her own. The second half of that old love/hate equation has surfaced once again!
It has been my habit (for seven years now) to add photographs to my daily blog. Sometimes those photos come from picture files already stored within my computer’s depths. Sometimes, they are attached to email messages I have sent to myself from my cell phone. Sometimes, they come from the internet – from a friend’s FB page or from another online site. Transferring those off-site photos to my picture files and then adding them to my blog has been easy-peasy. Now it isn’t.
‘When in doubt: Google’ – my newest mantra of choice. Immediately, I found many similar complaints and a number of suggested solutions, only some of which I truly understand. Problem not solved. Top of today’s agenda: call Mike’s Computers. So far, that’s a straightforward love relationship – at least from my end of things!
