…and not a martini in sight!

Us Old Ducks

We were sitting in the right spot – the Gordon Corner at the Lost Roo.  We were all (mostly) on time.  And it was the Gordon Schoewe Memorial Martini Christmas Luncheon, as planned and carried out every year.  But… not a martini in sight!

Roy and Gordon

Three of us – the two K’s (Kaye Mulvey, Kay Buesing) and me – try to meet for this Memorial Martini event twice a year – once on or around July 23rd (Gordon’s birthday) and once around Christmas, about the time of his Annual Christmas Party.  It’s the perfect excuse for having lunch with the girls, but if you knew Gordon you also know that no excuse was ever needed.

Nyel and Kaye

Kaye brought some pictures – taken at one of the last gatherings at her house before Jim Buesing’s death in… when?  None of us could quite remember.  Not even Kay.  But we were pretty sure it was before Roy died and we knew for certain that it was before Charles died…  And so our conversation went.  Anyone listening in would probably have shaken their heads in sorrow or sympathy or aghastment (is there such a word?)

Sydney, Charles, Roy

Gordon could have helped us out with those dates.  He was the one, of all of us, who remembered every birthday, every anniversary, every important occasion.  That we old ducks are getting pretty fuzzy in the Remembering Department wouldn’t have bothered him a twit.  He would have laughed, taken another sip of his martini, and told us some pertinent and probably well-worn story about one of our escapades together.

It was a great lunch!  We vowed to do it again – if we remember!  Merry Christmas, Gordon and Roy and Jim and Charles!  We miss you, every one!
