Just when you think you have at least part of it figured out, life has a way of gobsmacking you once again. It’s one of those laws or rules that I should be used to now that I’m in my geriatric years. But, no… I can’t even find the perverse humor in it.
The Mystery Book Club (or at least some of us) have been talking about a trip to Louise Penny country – Montreal, Quebec City, and Three Pines. Well, Three Pines is mythical (much like Brigadoon) but we know about where it is and we want to have a look around. I think we are hoping that the veil will part and we’ll be able to walk into the village and have a drink at the bistro with Inspector Armand Gamache and crazy Ruth Zardo and all our Three Pines ‘friends’.
We have talked about making this ‘pilgrimage’ next fall. We are investigating possibilities, making lists of “must-sees” and “must-dos,” and trying to estimate costs. The latest fact-finding report by our Finance Department made me gulp a little but, still do-able I thought. And then the Rain Gods stuck their oar in.
Actually, it was probably just my grandfather up there nudging us toward a little reality check in the matter of the stewardship of this old house. A cursory investigation of the leak above our library window has revealed that it’s probably a lot more than a flashing/gutter/trim board problem. It involves a three-by-three section of the roof and may well include the structure below – depending upon the presence of that old enemy ‘dry-rot.’
Once again, the jury is out regarding a visit to Three Pines. Maybe we’ll know more this weekend when the weatherman is promising us a break and the repairman can remove our leaky house cover and take a good look underneath. One thing for sure, Inspector Gamache isn’t going anywhere, whether we are or not… Hopefully that back burner won’t have to be in use for too long.
I know all about house repairs and feel your pain.
It certainly is a pain that house repair has to take precedence over visiting Three Pines (in area at least)! I think Louise’s model for Armand was my police officer/FBI agent Dad. They even look alike…
Well we could put 3 pines visit on back burner not you!
One of my favorite series of all times…and have always wanted to visit three pines territory…
Come on with us if ever we get this journey together! I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have along with us!
Oh, no! Leaky roof and damp books! We’re sending warm, dry vibes your way. Miss you guys! -Susan
Back atcha! We wish all of your a wonderful holiday season in your lovely new house. Hugs to everyone!
How about some really sticky glue? No, I shouldn’t joke. Water leaks are a big pain. Sorry about the trip.
Yep, ‘they’ did that — a special kind of caulk. Didn’t help one bit… We are still planning to head south, leak or no leak. Now it’s more a question of the roads and if we can get through… Merry Christmas Caroline! Hope to meet you this spring.
