I’m not sure how… but it worked!

Greater Downtown Oysterville

Tucker and I were having one of those Oysterville chats the other day – you know, both of us in the road sort of half-way between our house and the church – when Tucker spied a set of keys glinting in the sun. They appeared to be keys for a truck and a car and maybe for a padlock. There was a worn leather fob but no ID.

We figured they belonged to a tourist and that when they discovered them missing, they’d retrace their steps and, perhaps, “inquire within.” At our house. It happens fairly frequently. People have stopped to ask if we’ve found dark glasses (even prescription ones), cell phones, briefcases and all manner of things that they remembered seeing last when they visited the church. Sometimes we have found and rescued them; mostly, no such luck.

Inquire Within?

Inquire Within?

At that moment, there were no cars parked nearby – not in the lane, not on the road – so Tucker, who was on his bike, rode over to the schoolhouse to see if there might be a car there. Maybe with some frustrated individual searching pockets or purse for keys. No such luck. So we left them on the ground just outside our gate. Tucker thought if someone came looking they’d see them right away. I gave it overnight but then brought them in the house. I think I had visions of some critter (packrat? crow?) making off with them, vehicle or no vehicle.

I decided I’d try posting something about Found Keys on FaceBook. Tucker seemed skeptical. When I mentioned it to Nyel he just gave me one of those ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ looks. I guess I don’t need to point out that neither of them are into FB or any other sort of social media. Anyway, it took a few hours, but pretty soon our friend Chuck called to say he’d be over for his lost keys.

When in doubt... post!

When in doubt… post!

I’m not quite certain how it all worked. I’m pretty sure Chuck isn’t a FB kinda guy either. I think our mutual friend Vivian saw my post and gave him a call. Anyway, it worked! I feel totally smug and on the cutting edge! But I doubt if the guys will be hopping on board the Zuckerman Express anytime soon. Oh well…

Lots of places have FB pages for lost pets and many get found that way. If people share the post to their wall eventually the person who’s missing the pet sees it and/or people keep an eye out for whatever’s missing. St. Anthony is fairly reliable, but FB is, too. Did you make believers of Nyel and Tucker?
