Just A Little ‘Off’

Long Beach Rodeo

Rodeo weekend is coming up! Yahoo! It’s the ‘70th Annual’ to be presented by the Peninsula Saddle Club and even though we are an ‘all hat and no horse’ household, we try to get to at least some of the events down at the Clubhouse/Red Barn Arena.

The Long Beach Rodeo is always on the last weekend of July. Every other year those date coincide with the Finn Fest in Naselle and we are usually hard pressed to take in both. And some years, when the calendar is ‘right,’ the Rodeo falls on the weekend just before Nyel’s August 4th birthday. When that happens, his choice of celebrations always includes the Cowboy Breakfast no matter what.

This year, the calendar is just a little off. There will be another weekend – the 1st/2nd of August – before Nyel’s Big Day and so he is celebrating with two of his all-time favorite events – the Long Beach Rodeo this weekend and the Concours d’Elégance at Fort Vancouver the next weekend. It’s definitely going to be the best of all possible birthdays for Nyel!

Luckily, I’m equally enthusiastic about both events. Who wouldn’t be? There’s no arguing with that Cowboy Breakfast featuring hot cakes, eggs and ham or sausage gravy & biscuits. And then all those cute cowboys and cowgirls in their big hats, tall boots, and form-fitting Levis struttin’ their stuff in the arena with gorgeous horses, frisky calves, and scary bulls! What’s not to love?

At the Concours d’Elégance, of course, it’s all about cars – the most gorgeous cars ever! And speaking of gorgeous, my childhood friend Memi (whose grownup name is Ann Anderson) will be there with her beau Don and his Chevrolet Corvette. We have a date to meet then and will get to sit in the exclusive exhibition area with them! In that instance it will be a case of ‘all smiles and no classic car’ for us, but we have no problem at all being hangers-on!

Two big weekends in a row! And just because the calendar is a few days off! Woot! Woot!

I’d forgotten that Nyel’s birthday is the same as Jon’s. We will be at Stephanie & Dave’s for the weekend before the big day. Sounds like Nyel is spreading out his birthday of events. Way to go!!

    Happy Birthday, Nyel!
And Hi to Memi! It’s good to hear what you’re up to these days.
When I saw Suzie Holway’s article in the paper it reminded me of our “horsey” days in Oysterville.
