- Campaign Signs
It was a lively Friday gathering at our place last night. Everyone was upbeat after a sunny afternoon and looking forward to a weekend of visitors and barbecues and other celebrations for the Fourth. The conversations were lively and covered topics from bears to the upcoming election for county sheriff.
I learned that my picture had been on the front page of the Longview Daily News and that I had been quoted extensively about our recent bear ‘problems’ in Oysterville. Although I’ve not yet seen the article, it sounded like my remarks were taken just a bit out of context. Oh well. As far as the picture was concerned: the mother of one of our guests had called him and said that I was wearing a “very strange outfit” – a red sweater and a bright yellow hat. I had to smile. It’s my rain hat and it was, indeed, an incongruous look. Oh well, again. It seems I did make my point – that feeding bears doesn’t benefit anyone – not us, not the bears. But, according to the newspaper, that doesn’t seem to be a unanimous feeling, by any means.
The discussion turned to the Scott Johnson vs. John Didion race for county sheriff. “Why is Johnson running?” someone asked. “First he gets shot in the head and now it seems like he’s shooting himself in the foot.”
The reference, of course, was to Johnson’s three million dollar civil suit against the man who shot him and based upon the disability it caused him. “So why would we want a disabled county sheriff?” someone asked.
We speculated that Trooper Johnson was going for the sympathy vote and wondered if those voters might be the same people who were sympathetic to the bear feeder out on Stackpole Road. It really doesn’t bear thinking about…
So, where can we get our Didion signs? I’ve asked a couple of times but haven’t been able to find out.

Bears in Oysterville? They had a wrong map…..
Well, someone had the wrong map, but I suspect it was the man feeding them $4,000-a-year worth of dog food.
Before making judgments about why Scott Johnson is running for office, it might be well to talk to him. I’ve never heard him talk about anything like what you suggest.
I don’t think anyone was judging — just speculating. I understand there are to be several public forums where Trooper Johnson and Sheriff Didion will have opportunities to talk about the whys and wherefores of their campaigns and the public will have opportunities to ask questions. We intend to be there and are encouraging others to go as well. Dates and times should be in the paper.
There’s a house in Ilwaco on Spruce that seems to have denominational differences. It has signs for both in the front yard. Didion is an institution and seems to do a good job. I can’t imagine why someone would base their vote on a tragic incident, but unfortunately, not all voters reason well before they vote. I am sure that Trooper Johnson is a fine man, but Didion is doing a good job.
