Discombobulated in Oysterville

Daffodils in the RainI don’t know if my wires were crossed or if my brain cells have begun to atrophy into their own non-communicative compartments.  Whatever the difficulty, I hope it is an intermittent condition, not a progressive one.

I think it all began because I saw on the calendar that it was the first day of Spring-Tra-La.  Somehow, that translated (in my mind, anyway) to it being the 21st of March and that’s what I thought all day.  I even blogged about it and it was thanks to my friend and blog-fan Stephanie that I learned that the vernal equinox had arrived early this year and it was actually the 20th.  All day.

But I didn’t get that news until late last night.  In typical ‘making lemonade out of lemons’ fashion, my immediate thought was, “Great!  I’ve gained a day!’  But, I think the day I gained was probably yesterday and I didn’t know it in time to take advantage of it.  It turned out to be one of those frittering sorts of days.

I did do one last check on my completed page proofs for Legendary Locals of the Long Beach Peninsula and, thankfully, caught one final error.  Within minutes, thanks to the magic of email and pdf files and cyberspace, the book was being printed, or so my production editor told me.  I’m not naïve enough to think that the book will be error-free, but I do think we found the worst of them.

Other than that, the day was a bust.  I left my mailbox keys at the post office.  I began cleaning my office but didn’t get very far.  I took note of the fact that Cyndy Hayward’s property to the north of the house next door has been rototilled and wondered what that was about.  And I saw that Tucker is in town and thought I’d try to catch up with him, but that never happened.  All in all, it was a typical Wednesday, March 21st kind of day.

On the other hand, in the forefront of my mind was the fact that Thursday (which I knew would follow Wednesday as it always does) would be Nyel’s first day back to work after seven weeks of recovery from his surgery.  I also had it clearly in mind that on Thursday the 21st I would be meeting Patty and Noel for lunch and would be enjoying a performance by the 5th Avenue Theater’s outreach program at Long Beach School.

And so… here we are!  Go figure!

More often than not the equinoxes occur on the 21st of March and September so it is to understand the confusion. This year we did what my friend Lorraine calls the Full Tilt Boogie a little earlier than normal. Regardless of the wintery weather we are having, the days are now officially longer than the nights which makes some people (my husband among them) very happy.
