Here it is the 21st of March and we are having our first righteous storm of the month. The rain is being whipped against the house by high wind gusts and whitecaps blanket the bay. As I see it, this year it’s Spring, not March, that has come in like a lion. The first days of March were calm by comparison.
I blame global warming. Or Nyel’s delicious potato salad. He had a hankerin’ last week and, lord knows, we have no shortage of eggs, so he hobbled around the kitchen and made a gigantic one – fit for a Fourth of July picnic. Everyone knows that potato salad is a summertime dish so my theory is that he has completely thrown off the calendar. I think this storm is a protest by the weather gods.
Not logical, I know, but neither are most of those weather proverbs we grew up with and that doesn’t make them less true. Another one about March goes: “As it rains in March, so it rains in June.” That’s a pretty safe one here; June is always a rainy month. And how about “April showers bring May flowers.” Another no brainer.
It’s all about hope and putting up with the present because the future will be better. I’m not sure how potato salad relates. Potato salad in March means another six weeks of winter?? Makes just as much sense as that groundhog’s shadow, it seems to me.
Meanwhile, I’m up for another potato salad. And maybe some ribs to go with it. The taste of summer suits my palate anytime of year!
Happy First Day of Spring, Sydney! But you’re wrong about one thing, today is the 20th. It arrived twink early this year. Nyel’s potato salad sounds like enough to evoke visions of watermelon and fried chicken in the yard. My grandparents hauled tables out to the yard for summer extended family meals. It’s blustery in Gig Harbor, too, so we had pomegranate soup to celebrate the first day of Persian New Year’s.
