Our Kitchen

Our Kitchen

Yesterday, Nyel pulled the handle off the refrigerator door.  Not on purpose, mind you.  It’s been threatening to come loose for quite a while, but this time it actually broke.  It’s on the workbench in the garage, in line for repair.

It’s not the only issue with our refrigerator.  For the last several years, the icemaker has been problematic.  And I think one of the crispers is cracked.  But, when you think about it, the estimated longevity of appliances is twenty years and ours were all purchased in 1997 when we re-did this kitchen.  It’s probably time…

We’ve already replaced the dishwasher.  And we’ve kept the washer and dryer going by ‘main strength and awkwardness’ and many calls to the repairman.  Our stove, too, is overdue for replacement but, in its case, there are some special considerations.  Like how to vent it and the cost involved.  Don’t ask…

When it comes right down to it, of course, the bottom line is our budget and, perhaps more importantly, our age.  In twenty more years I’ll be approaching the venerable age of 101.  Will I still be in this house?  Will I still be cooking (not that I do all that much now)?  Or cleaning or caring about whether the clothes get washed? Will I even be on the topside of this earth?

So with our limited ‘fixed’ income, should we be investing in appliances?  Or maybe a new set of teeth when the time comes?  Big questions when you reach “the age of wisdom.”  Meanwhile… Nyel is on the hunt for the superglue and I’m hoping for a big blip in book sales for the Christmas season.  I have quite a few ‘in stock.’  Call me.

Appliances are such a pain. Our so-called new ones haven’t lasted anywhere near 20 years. It’s hard to know when to cut your losses and get new or maybe reconditioned.

I think appliances talk to one another: “I’ll break tomorrow, you can go kaput on Thursday, and how about you kick the bucket in two weeks?”
